I’ve been shopping for skincare in Seoul since I was a teenager, long before “K-beauty” was a category. Back then you’d buy your toner from a pharmacist and your sheet masks came in a plain white packet with Korean text that nobody outside Korea had heard of. Today those same products are on the shelves of Sephora in Paris, sold out on Amazon in New York, and reshipped from Seoul to buyers in forty countries.
The point is: Seoul is still where it all happens first. Products launch here months before they reach international retailers. The selection is deeper, the prices are 20–40% lower than overseas, and the shopping experience — especially if you know where to go — is genuinely one of the best parts of visiting the city.
This guide covers the key districts, the stores worth your time, and the specific products I’d tell any first-time visitor to look for. It also covers the practical stuff: how to get your tax refund, when the big sales happen, and the app that’ll save you from buying something your skin doesn’t need.
Where to Shop
Myeongdong — The K-Beauty Epicentre
Myeongdong is the most concentrated beauty shopping district in the world. More than 100 cosmetics stores packed into roughly 0.4 square kilometres, with every major Korean road-shop brand represented: Innisfree, Etude House, Nature Republic, The Face Shop, Skin Food, and more. Staff in most stores speak functional English, Japanese, and Chinese. The area also has the Stylenanda Pink Hotel flagship (see below) and one of Olive Young’s highest-revenue locations.
When to go: Weekday mornings are best. Aim to arrive when stores open at 10:30 AM and finish before 1 PM, before the lunch crowds arrive. Weekend evenings — especially Fridays and Saturdays — are chaotic. Cherry blossom season (late March to early May) and Chuseok holidays push foot traffic to extremes.
Getting there: Myeongdong Station, Line 4, Exit 5 or 6; or Euljiro 1-ga Station, Line 2.
One tip: the side alleys off the main pedestrian street are less crowded and sometimes have slightly better deals. Don’t just follow the main drag.
Olive Young — Korea’s Beauty Pharmacy
If you only have time for one stop in Seoul, make it Olive Young. It’s the dominant multi-brand beauty retailer in Korea — think Sephora meets a well-curated pharmacy — and it stocks everything from the mainstream staples to the indie brands that haven’t made it overseas yet. The “Trend Zone” at the front of most stores highlights Korea’s most-searched and fastest-selling products that month, which is genuinely useful if you’re trying to keep up.
Olive Young Myeongdong Flagship — 53 Myeongdong-gil, Jung-gu. The largest-revenue Olive Young in Korea, renovated and reopened in late 2023. Good for first-timers: well-organised, friendly staff, and a reliable stock of everything on this list.
Olive Young N Seongsu — Seongsu-dong (Seoul’s “Brooklyn” neighbourhood). Korea’s biggest Olive Young, opened November 2024. Three floors covering skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, wellness, and a café. Free walk-in skin analysis available — no reservation needed, first-come basis. Worth the subway ride if you want the full experience. Nearest station: Seongsu Station, Line 2.
Big Bang Sales: Olive Young runs a major quarterly discount event — up to 60% off — in the first week of March, June, September, and December. If your trip overlaps, plan accordingly.
Shop online before or after your trip at global.oliveyoung.com.
Amore Seongsu — The Amorepacific Flagship
Amorepacific is the company behind Laneige, Innisfree, Sulwhasoo, Etude, IOPE, Hera, and Mamonde — and their Seongsu-dong flagship brings all of those brands under one roof in a beautifully converted former car repair workshop.
The star feature is the Beauty Library: 2,000+ products you can test freely, with professional makeup artists available for consultations. If you’ve ever wanted to properly swatch a Sulwhasoo cushion or find your exact Laneige shade before buying, this is the place. Monthly pop-ups, custom foundation and lipstick mixing, an Osulloc tea café on the second floor, and a rooftop with views of Seongsu.
Address: 7, Achasan-ro 11-gil, Seongdong-gu | Seongsu Station, Line 2, Exit 2 (~300m walk) | Closed Mondays, 10:30–20:30.

Stylenanda / 3CE — Hongdae
Stylenanda is a Korean fashion and colour cosmetics brand that became famous for its runway-to-street aesthetic — bold colours, high shine, unafraid of pigment. Its makeup line, 3CE (3 Concept Eyes), is consistently one of the most talked-about K-makeup brands for a reason.
The Hongdae flagship is the original and the most fun to visit. The Pink Pool Café on the 4th floor is exactly what it sounds like — a social media landmark — but the ground floor makeup displays are genuinely good for browsing the full 3CE range.
Address: 23, Wausan-ro 29da-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul | 5-minute walk from Hongik University Station (Line 2) | Hours: 11:00–23:00.

Seongsu-dong — Seoul’s Indie Beauty Strip
Beyond Olive Young N Seongsu and Amore Seongsu, the Seongsu-dong neighbourhood has quietly become the best place in Seoul to find indie and up-and-coming Korean beauty brands. Dasique, rom&nd, Fwee, TIRTIR, and Hetras all have a presence here, often in concept stores that feel more like gallery spaces than shops. It’s a good half-day neighbourhood to combine with the two flagship stores above.
Apgujeong / Cheongdam — For Premium and Luxury
If you’re interested in the prestige end of Korean skincare — Sulwhasoo, Hera, Sum:37, O Hui — head south of the Han River to Apgujeong.
The Sulwhasoo Flagship Store (18 Dosan-daero 45-gil, near Dosan Park) is a six-storey building designed by Neri & Hu, with in-store spa services and counselling by trained skincare advisors. It carries flagship-exclusive products you won’t find elsewhere. More info: Sulwhasoo Flagship — KoreaToDo
The Galleria Department Store and Shinsegae in this area both have strong premium beauty halls. Chicor (Korea’s version of Sephora) has locations in Gangnam and Myeongdong for a broader colour cosmetics selection.
What to Buy
Products are grouped by category. Prices are approximate in-store Seoul prices. Buying in Seoul is typically 20–40% cheaper than equivalent international prices.

Biodance Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask — The most talked-about sheet mask in Korea right now. Stack these savings with a VAT refund (below) and the Big Bang sale and you’re looking at significant discounts.
Get Your Tax Back
Korea’s VAT is 10%. As a foreign tourist, you can recover approximately 7% of your purchase price after processing fees — which adds up quickly if you’re buying in volume.
Immediate in-store refund: For purchases between ₩15,000 and ₩1,000,000 per transaction (up to ₩5,000,000 total for the trip), show your passport and flight information at the cashier. The refund is given on the spot in cash.
Airport Tax Refund: For larger purchases, collect your refund at the airport. Check in at the airline counter first and let staff know you have goods to declare. Bring all goods (unused, in original packaging), your passport, boarding pass, and all tax refund receipts. After Customs stamps your receipts in the departure terminal, collect your refund at the VAT refund window past immigration.
Look for: “Tax Free,” “Global Blue,” or “Easy Tax Refund” logos in-store — only participating stores can issue refund receipts.

Olive Young Big Bang Sale
Four times a year — first week of March, June, September, and December — Olive Young runs its “Big Bang” sale with discounts up to 60% sitewide. If your trip overlaps with one of these windows, it’s worth timing your Olive Young visit accordingly.
Free Skin Analysis
- Olive Young N Seongsu: Walk-in skin analysis, no booking required. First-come, first-served; go early on weekday mornings.
- Amore Seongsu Beauty Library: Professional makeup artists will assess your skin type and recommend products across all 30+ Amorepacific brands. Useful if you want a proper consultation before spending on Sulwhasoo or Laneige.
The “Service” Culture
At Myeongdong road shops (single-brand stores like Innisfree, Etude, Nature Republic), it’s common practice — after spending ₩50,000 or more — to politely ask the staff: “Service?” They will typically add extra samples or travel-size products to your bag at no cost. It’s not pushy; it’s an expected part of the shopping exchange. Don’t be shy.
Download Hwahae (화해)
Hwahae is Korea’s go-to ingredient-checker app — the local equivalent of INCI Decoder or Think Dirty. Scan any product barcode in-store to instantly see the full ingredient list, EWG safety rating, user reviews from Korean buyers, and flagged irritants or allergens. It’s free, and it’ll save you from impulse-buying something your skin won’t agree with.
Seoul’s beauty industry moves fast. Products that go viral here take months — sometimes years — to reach international shelves, and by then the formulas have often been tweaked for export. Shopping at the source means getting the original, at the original price, before the rest of the world catches up.
If you’re building a Seoul itinerary around it, the Seongsu-dong circuit — Olive Young N Seongsu, Amore Seongsu, and the indie brand stores along the strip — makes a strong half-day. Pair it with a trip to Myeongdong on a different morning and you’ll have covered the full range, from the cult drugstore staples to the prestige flagships.
